India’s Defence Leap: Homegrown ATAGS Artillery Gun Prepares for Trials

India is gearing up for a major leap in indigenous defence capabilities with the upcoming trials of the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), a homegrown mobile artillery platform designed for precision and performance. The momentum follows the successful Operation Sindoor, which has further reinforced the country’s strategic focus on self-reliance in defence. Sanctioned in 2012, the ATAGS project is spearheaded by DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), in partnership with private players like Tata Advanced Systems. Engineered for deployment in extreme terrains — from the scorching Thar Desert to the icy heights of Siachen — ATAGS boasts a best-in-class consistency, high burst and sustained firing rates, and advanced optronics sights for accurate targeting up to 1.5 km, day or night. Designed for both direct and indirect fire modes, the system represents a new generation of Indian artillery, integrating futuristic technologies across electronics, mechanical systems, and battlefield mobility. With the trial phase on the horizon, India’s indigenous firepower is poised to make its mark, not just as a defence asset, but as a symbol of its evolving technological strength and strategic independence.
