The Promise Fulfilled: How Arvind Dharmapuri Delivered the Turmeric Board to Telangana

Telangana’s turmeric farmers, particularly those from Nizamabad, have long been renowned for cultivating some of the world’s finest turmeric varieties. However, their journey has been riddled with stagnant support prices, inadequate infrastructure, and a series of unkept promises. In the face of these challenges, one man emerged to rewrite the narrative: Arvind Dharmapuri, Member of Parliament from Nizamabad.

1. A Bold Promise:

The demand for a Turmeric Board had been a critical issue for years. Despite the hope for better conditions following the formation of Telangana, the 10-year tenure of the BRS government failed to deliver tangible results for turmeric farmers. In 2014, Kalvakuntla Kavitha, who contested as an MP, had promised to establish a Turmeric Board. However, after her victory, the promise was left unfulfilled. The state government did little to ensure fair support prices for turmeric, leading to growing frustration among farmers.

Amid this disillusionment, Arvind Dharmapuri, representing the BJP, made a bold pledge during the 2019 elections. He signed a bond paper promising to resign if he failed to establish the Turmeric Board and secure a fair support price for the farmers. This commitment struck a chord with Nizamabad’s farmers, earning their trust and securing him a landslide victory. Frustrated by years of empty promises, farmers rallied behind Arvind, and he became their voice in Parliament, dedicated to fulfilling his pledge.

2. Arvind’s Tireless Advocacy:

Once in office, Arvind wasted no time in advocating for turmeric farmers. He raised their issues in Parliament, ensuring their struggles were heard at the national level. Arvind also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to emphasize the economic and cultural significance of turmeric to Telangana. His relentless efforts played a key role in establishing the Spices Board Regional Office in Nizamabad and helped increase turmeric prices from ₹5,000 to ₹22,000 per quintal, dramatically improving the livelihoods of farmers.

Despite facing challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, Arvind’s determination remained unwavering. His tireless advocacy and strategic interventions culminated in the creation of the Turmeric Board—a monumental achievement for the farmers of Telangana.

3. The Historic Milestone:

In October 2023, after years of persistent effort, Arvind’s vision became a reality when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the establishment of the Turmeric Board. This momentous achievement marked a significant turning point for Telangana’s turmeric farmers.

In January 2024, the Turmeric Board was officially inaugurated during Sankranti by Union Minister of Commerce & Industry Piyush Goyal, alongside Arvind. Headquartered in Nizamabad, the board has been hailed as a transformative step for the region’s farmers, providing the long-awaited institutional support they so desperately needed.

4. A Legacy of Genuine Leadership:

Arvind Dharmapuri’s success in bringing the Turmeric Board to Telangana is a testament to his dedication and commitment to the people of Nizamabad. By bridging the gap between policymakers and the farming community, Arvind has set a new benchmark for political leadership in the region.

From signing a bond paper to delivering on a decades-old promise, Arvind’s journey underscores the power of persistence, genuine leadership, and the impact of a promise fulfilled. His efforts have not only transformed the lives of Telangana’s turmeric farmers but have also solidified his legacy as a leader who turns vision into reality.
